September 15: Nutrition for Athletes
Niraj Shah, MD: Dr. Niraj Shah, MD is a family medicine physician who has also completed a fellowship in obesity medicine and lifestyle medicine. He has a strong interest in nutrition and healthy lifestyles, He is also a certified yoga instructor, professional chef and in training to become a meditation teacher. In this webinar Dr. Shah explains that eating healthy starts with eating whole foods with minimal processing and minimal cooking. He also discusses the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score, Fiber Carb Ratios and gives some examples of these different concepts.

Dr. Jason Smith, DO, CIC, FAOASM: While attending Gannon University, Dr. Smith was a three sport NCAA Division 1&2 scholarship athlete. After graduating Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008, he completed his Family Medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital and his subsequent fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He has worked in all divisions of college sports, NFL, NBA, MLB and the US Soccer Federation, and now serves as the current Medical Director of Sports Medicine for Mercy Health in Toledo, Ohio.
October 9: Identifying Addiction in Athletes and the Next Steps in Care
In this webinar Dr. Christopher Schenewerk, MD talked to us about identifying addictions in athletes as well as our patients whether it be alcohol, opioids, other drugs, etc. He also talked to us about what the next steps are once we identify the addiction, role played a scenario he has had, and answered some questions. The second hour of the webinar was an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting from a group that he started and attends. You will be able to hear what goes on at an AA meeting and have a better understanding of what happens at them. At this meeting they discuss Step 4, “make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.” This will give you some background when they start discussing it.
